How do I scan a product?

Peelback offers three ways to analyze products:

  • Ingredient List Scan - Point your camera at any ingredient list and tap the scan button. Best for detailed analysis.
  • Product Label Scan - Scan the front of a product to identify it by brand and name. Great for quick lookups.
  • Text Search - Type a product name to look up its ingredients without scanning.

You can scan food labels, skincare, supplements, and more — no barcode needed.

What is Family Safety Check?

Family Safety Check lets you see at a glance whether a product is safe for everyone in your household with just one scan.

After scanning, you'll see a card showing each family member with a checkmark (safe) or warning (has concerns). Tap any profile to see specific issues.

To use this feature:

  1. Create profiles for family members in the Profile tab
  2. Add their allergens and dietary preferences
  3. Scan any product — everyone's safety status appears automatically

Where can I find my scan history?

Your scan history is available in the History tab. Here you can:

  • View all past scans with their ratings
  • Search for specific products you've scanned
  • Tap any scan to see the full analysis again
  • Delete scans by swiping left

Scan history is stored locally on your device. Clearing app data will remove your history.

What do the ratings mean?

  • Green (Safe): No concerns found for your profile. The ingredient is generally recognized as safe.
  • Yellow (Caution): Some potential concerns. This could be a controversial additive, artificial ingredient, or something that conflicts with your dietary preferences.
  • Red (Avoid): Matches one of your allergens, or is a known harmful substance. Pay close attention to these.

The overall rating is the worst individual ingredient rating — if any ingredient is "Avoid", the product is rated "Avoid".

How do I set up my allergen profile?

Go to the Profile tab and tap "My Profile". You can select:

  • Allergens: Ingredients that will always be flagged as "Avoid"
  • Dietary Preferences: Diets like vegan, keto, halal, etc.
  • Medications: Enter medications to check for interactions

Your profile is stored locally on your device and used to personalize your scan results.

Can I create profiles for my family?

Yes! You can create multiple profiles for family members. Each profile can have its own allergens, dietary preferences, and medications.

Tap "Family Profiles" in the Profile tab to add profiles.

Family Safety Check: Once you have multiple profiles, every scan automatically shows whether the product is safe for each family member — no need to scan multiple times or switch profiles.

How accurate is Peelback?

Peelback uses advanced AI to analyze ingredients, but it's not perfect:

  • Text recognition may struggle with damaged, blurry, or unusual labels
  • AI analysis is based on training data and may contain errors
  • Product formulations change over time

Always read actual product labels, especially if you have severe allergies. Peelback is an aid, not a replacement for careful label reading.

What is the Evidence Report?

When you tap an ingredient in your scan results, you'll see an Evidence Report showing:

  • Evidence Level: How strong the scientific evidence is (Strong, Moderate, or Preliminary)
  • Regional Status: Where the ingredient is approved, restricted, or banned
  • Health Concerns: Why this ingredient may be flagged and what the concerns are
  • What It Means For You: Personalized guidance based on your profile

This helps you understand why an ingredient is flagged, not just that it is.

How do I compare products?

After scanning a product, tap the Compare button to find a healthier alternative:

  1. Scan or search for another product
  2. See a side-by-side comparison showing:
    • Health score difference
    • Ingredient counts
    • Key differences highlighted

This helps you make better choices at the store by seeing exactly how products stack up.

How do I share my scan results?

From any scan result, tap the Share button to create a beautiful share card:

  • Save to Photos: Save the card image to your camera roll
  • Share: Send via Messages, social media, or any app

Share cards include the product name, health score, key ingredients, and a QR code so others can download Peelback.

What does 'Help Others' mean?

When you scan a product barcode that isn't in our database, you can help by contributing the product info to Open Food Facts — a free, public food database.

What gets shared:

  • Product name and brand
  • Barcode number
  • Ingredient list (from your scan)

What stays private:

  • Your profile and personal data
  • Your scan history

Contributing helps improve product coverage for everyone using food transparency apps.

How does product search work?

Tap the search icon on the scanner to look up products by name instead of scanning:

  1. Type a product name (e.g., "Cheerios" or "Tide pods")
  2. Select from matching results
  3. View the full ingredient analysis

Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a collaborative database with millions of products worldwide.

Can't find a product? Try scanning the ingredient list directly for the most accurate results.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your profile data (allergens, dietary preferences, medications) is stored only on your device and never uploaded to our servers.

When you scan, images are sent securely for AI analysis and immediately discarded — we don't store your scans on our servers.

What subscription options are available?

Peelback Pro is available with three options:

  • Monthly: $4.99/month
  • Yearly: $29.99/year (includes a 7-day free trial)
  • Lifetime: $59.99 one-time purchase

All options include unlimited scans, family profiles, medication interaction alerts, product search, and shareable scan cards.

How do I cancel my subscription?

To cancel Peelback Pro:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap "Subscriptions"
  4. Find Peelback and tap it
  5. Tap "Cancel Subscription"

You'll keep Pro features until the end of your current billing period.

Note: Lifetime purchases do not require cancellation as they are one-time payments with no recurring charges.
